When
every bit of information or data processed in an organisation is at a mercy of
an inhuman machine called computer, one needs a humane approach in dealing with
computers. Agreed that computers don’t have minds of their own, but they do
have life, i.e. expected period till they are going to last. And yes, they do
get infected by viruses. But here we aren’t talking of computer viruses. We
will talk about routine repairs and maintenance.
Computers
aren’t built to last forever. In fact, we see introduction of latest, advanced
machines almost daily which make your existing computers outdated. However,
with little care and maintenance, computers can give years of service.
In
my career as IT consultant I come across many organisations that neglect or pay
scant regard to their computing systems. The result is crashed systems, virus
infected machines, lost data and files, and irreparable loss of time and money.
Had they invested little amount for Computer Repair Services or employed computer technicians, things would have been
better.
Modern
computers are designed to withstand both internal and external threats.
Firewall and backups do help but computers still need regular maintenance and
repairs in order to get optimum performance.
Maintaining
computers doesn’t cost much. There are different options depending on the size
of your organisation or number of computers. We may rule out large
organisations as they have in-house Computer Technicians, network engineers
and system administrators to solve problems. Small and medium enterprises can employ
one or more means from those listed below.
Installation:
new, upcoming or expanding enterprises have one benefit – they can bring in latest
computers, servers, routers, printers or other hardware at the installation
stage itself. A monthly or yearly maintenance contract with computer repair
services is all they need to keep the IT system and network running.
IT Audit:
just like your body needs regular health check-up or your company needs its
accounts audited, your IT environment may need an audit assessment followed by
remedial actions and maintenance contract.
IT Consultancy:
A consultant’s role is of advisory nature. They work behind the curtain and
direct you or your computer technicians on how to solve problems. Their scope
may include hardware, software and networking problems.
Retainer Services: retainers are
consultants that remotely handle your work for a small monthly / ad hoc fee.
Computer Repair Services: for services not
falling under any of those listed above, there are always computer repair
services for fixing, troubleshooting and solving short- and long-term problems.
On
top of all above, there are online resources to help you.
